WHAT DO PHOTOGRAPHERS DO?
From my previous blog, I said photography has gone from just being a “No Future Ambition” kind of profession but to job one could be proud of, whichever way you may look at it.
So, just like all other professional jobs do have description so does photography.
Photographers are artists with the camera, using a blend of technical skills and an artistic eye to take pictures of people, places, landscapes, food, you name it. Photographers can work as fine artists, wedding and event photographers, or sell their photos to commercial clients. Today's photographers are almost all digital, no longer using traditional film cameras.
In addition to knowing how to use and care for high-end camera equipment, photographers must also understand the wide variety of photo editing and printing equipment available. Types of photographers include portrait, commercial/industrial, aerial, scientific, news, fine arts and university. Many photographers are self-employed and must work to gain new business.
WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS?
Formal education is not required to become a photographer but you will need training. Many photographers get degrees in photography, or at least take many classes in photography. Through education, training or experience, photographers need to learn about equipment, gain technical skills and understand design and shot composition. Depending on your specialty in photography, other classes may be helpful.
Photographers get jobs through their portfolio- an example of their best work that they can show to potential clients.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Artistic Ability: Photographers need to be able to compose a shot, understand framing, color and light to create a visually pleasing photograph.
- Business Skills: Independent photographers need skills to bring in new clients, meet with people, talk with customers, as well as run their own business, keep records and keep expenses in check.
- Computer Skills: Most photographic manipulation is done through computer. Retouching photos, adding details, or other digital additions will be through a computer.
- Attention to Detail: Photographers must have an eye on everything before, during and after the shot. Attention to detail makes sure that every hair is in place and nobody is photo bombing in the back of the shot.
- Interpersonal Skills: When working with people, photographers need to speak clearly and in a friendly way to get what they want out of the photograph
